The town of Candia has never accepted plastic containers
as a recyclable material. For years, the town’s recycling
center has been forced to incinerate plastic with the rest
of the non-recyclable garbage. That is about to change! The
township has teamed up with TerraCycle, Inc. to start recycling
used 1-gallon milk jugs. Better yet, for every used milk
jug that is dropped off, TerraCycle is donating money to
the Candia Township.
The Candia Recycling Center at 119 New Boston Road is asking
the general public to bring in used, uncrushed 1-gallon plastic
jugs. Please rinse out the jugs and leave the caps on. The
milk jugs will be shipped to TerraCycle™, who in turn
will pay the township one and a half times the market value
to help support further recycling efforts in Candia.
“Offering to pay over market value is quite generous,” says
Chuck Whitcher, Director of the center. “TerraCycle
is already saving us the cost of incinerating these jugs
and helping us to prevent unneeded toxins to be released
in the atmosphere.” But Whitcher says that collecting
plastic jugs is only the first step.
Candia’s new recycling drive will not only help to
raise funds but also raise awareness for the town’s
new recycling center due to be completed in 2008. The new
recycling center will accept many different types of plastic
bottles and will mark the first time plastics are widely
recycled in Candia history.
To get involved contact Chuck Whitcher at 603.483.2892 or
just start bringing uncrushed milk and water jugs to the
center. The jugs need to be uncrushed because TerraCycle
reuses the jugs to package their organic fertilizers made
from Worm Poop?!
TerraCycle makes all-natural plant foods from worm poop
and packages them in various sizes of used plastic bottles.
The super eco-friendly products are made and packaged entirely
in garbage! TerraCycle Plant Foods are available in many
big box retailers.
The recycling initiative is an extension of the TerraCycle
Bottle Brigade™. The Bottle Brigade is a nationwide
recycling program with over 3,500 schools, churches and other
community groups who collect used 20 oz soda bottles. For
every bottle they collect TerraCycle donates five cents to
a non-profit organization of their choice. The program has
enabled TerraCycle to rescue and reuse over 2 million soda
bottles and donate over $50,000 to non-profit organizations.
About TerraCycle, Inc.
TerraCycle (www.terracycle.net) was founded by Tom Szaky,
a 25-year old entrepreneur and Princeton University dropout.
The company debuted its revolutionary worm poop plant food
line at Wal*Mart® and The Home Depot® in Canada.
TerraCycle Plant Food™ is also the first consumer
product to earn the right to carry the Zerofootprint™ seal.
The seal signifies that the materials and manufacturing
process used to produce its products have virtually no
negative environmental repercussions.
TerraCycle worm poop plant foods and fertilizers are available
in Wal*Mart, Target, The Home Depot, Whole Foods Market® and
many other fine stores nationwide. In July 2006, an Inc.
magazine cover story crowned TerraCycle “The Coolest
Little Startup in America.” Joe Gardener™ recently
named TerraCycle products one of his “Best of the Must
Haves for 2007™”
