ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

REGION BENEFITS

Candia is located in the middle of the most vital region of the State, and could easily be considered a key part of two economic centers- the Greater Manchester area, and the Seacoast area. Quality of life and quality employment meet amid the beauty and rural character of a wonderful natural environment. Candia is linked to both of these economic centers by Route 101, directly accessed from Exit 3 near Candia's center.

AVAILABLE WORKFORCE INFORMATION

Businesses thinking about opportunities in Candia would do well to consider the availability of qualified workers in the area. The area has a plentiful supply of hard working, well-educated workers necessary to the success of any business.

New Englanders are legendary for their solid Yankee work ethic, and workers around Candia are no exception. The area has traditionally had workers with a broad range of manufacturing skills such as machining, metalworking, woodworking and many other skilled crafts and trades. Workers in the area are also well known for their ability to support high technology and service industries. Much of this can be tied to the broad array of resources for training and education in the area. Please visit the Manchester Area Colleges Consortium for specific information on area colleges and training resources.

Manchester offers exceptional resources, all of which are easily accessible only 20 minutes from Candia. Transportation is key to the success of the region. The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the country, and offers a broad range of flights and destinations to suit the needs of the business traveler or the family on vacation. Additionally, Interstate 93 offers excellent ground transportation to the region, and is only 10 minutes from Candia. I-93 provides easy access to points south and north, and connects Candia to Boston in roughly an hour.

The Manchester area is vibrant economically and draws business not only from the immediate area but from afar. Manchester offers a wealth of high tech employment, hosting many well known firms, such as Texas Instruments and Deka Research. Quality employment is supported by strong educational resources, including UNH-Manchester, Southern NH University, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Hesser College, St. Anselm's College, the NH Institute of Arts, and the NH Community Technical College.

Manchester also offers great sports and entertainment choices, all of which enhance Candia's quality of life. These include the Verizon Wireless Arena, home to the Manchester Wolves and the Manchester Monarchs; Merchantsauto.com Stadium, home of the Fisher Cats baseball; the Palace Theater; the Currier Museum, and more. Manchester is increasingly home to a wide variety of quality restaurants as well.

The Seacoast region is also close by, and like Manchester, is famous for economic vitality, educational resources, and a high quality of life. Portsmouth offers the Pease International Tradeport and the Kittery Naval facility, plus the historic seaport itself.

Transportation is enhanced by easy access to I-95, which offers an alternate route to Boston as well as a quick route to Portland, Maine and other points north.

Like Manchester, the Seacoast region has strong educational resources to bolster its capacity for quality employment and enhance the area's quality of life. The University system is based nearby in Durham, just 15 minutes from Portsmouth and 35 minutes from Candia.

Founded in 1866, the University of New Hampshire is a public university serving an undergraduate population of 10,500 students. Recognized among public universities for the quality of the academic experience it provides to its students, UNH is also a rising star among research universities, yet it retains the look and feel of a New England liberal arts college with a faculty dedicated to teaching.

UNH offers diverse coursework in which students are encouraged to pursue their interests across disciplinary lines. Within its seven schools, the university offers 2,000 courses in over 100 majors, and special programs include a particularly strong Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, the Honors Program, and a wide range of opportunities for internships, study abroad, and national exchange experiences.

Recently, UNH completed a major renovation of the Dimond Library. Other campus highlights include a recently-completed journalism laboratory, a student union building including two theaters and a food court, a sports complex featuring a 6,000 seat sports arena and concert hall, and a new recreation center. Ideally located, UNH is within minutes of Candia.
